Client – Russell Cawberry
Project – Masonry wall removal, M&E strip out and enabling works

This project at St Thomas’s Hospital involved extensive removal of concrete masonry walls, whilst the Hospital remained operational with patients in adjacent buildings and an area of the demolition works being above one of the main operating theatres. KpH deployed its unique silent demolition techniques to avoid causing disturbance within the operating theatre and to patients. Due to the nature of the works some noise was unavoidable, works which included an element of noise were carried out on weekends to avoid disruption.

The scope of works included:

  • Mobilisation to site and site set up, which included the installation of a 110 volt, 32 amp electrical supply for the hand held crushers to operate
  • Demolition of 203 linear metres of concrete masonry walls using hand held hydraulic crushers
  • Installation of floor protection to dampen the noise of falling concrete debris from wall dismantling operations
  • Removal of concrete walls and partitions from within the building via suitable wheel transport using the goods lift
  • Working off tower scaffolds, removal of mechanical and electrical services above high level ceiling grids and risers, including the removal and disposal of lagging from the ventilation services
  • Removal of air handling units/ducting with hand tools, grinders and hot cutting equipment, monitored by an appointed fire warden, having set up fire fighting equipment and issued hot work permits
  • Dismantling and removal of three "Auto-claves" and one washer
  • All waste streams were segregated into appropriate skips and disposed of to meet current "Duty of Care" disposal regulations, waste was categorised and recorded on the SWMP (Site Waste Management Plan) for this project

Client - Multibuild (Balfour Beatty)
Project - Structural alterations, strip out and enabling works

This project, for Whitbread PLC’s new Premier Inn at Hanger Lane Acton, involved extensive structural works to be carried out following the initial strip out of the building. KpH carried out the formation of an atrium throughout the building, in addition to other essential works as detailed below:

  • An atrium of 100m2 was formed within each of the 300mm concrete floor slabs of the building, using hydraulic crushing equipment and breakers to ensure a clean break was achieved
  • Crash decks were erected plus a debris chute to allow for the safe removal of rubble and concrete
  • Structural engineers consented to a 3-tonne excavator with breaker being craned onto the roof, to assist with the removal of the heavily engineered roof
  • A MWEP was used to assist with the removal of the building’s double glazed windows units and block work fascias
  • Two hydraulic lift systems were removed, which included extensive hot works techniques
  • The window cleaning track equipment and plinths were dismantled and removed from roof areas
  • The second roof contained asphalt, insulation and a 300mm screed, these were removed back to the core concrete roof slab
