Case Study 1: RAF Halton, Aylesbury

Project: Tank Removal and Land Remediation
Client: Serco

Another recent project was the cleaning, degassing and removal of four 30,000 litre heavy oil tanks, including bunds, at RAF Halton. All works were carried out in accordance with HSE and environmental legislation, with the tank cleaning and removal works under the safety procedures of MoD SRP 03. Once the tanks were disposed of from the site to a licensed recycling facility, the concrete bund was demolished. During its demolition the ground beneath was found to contain contamination, so work was stopped while environmental consultants were called in to assess the extent of the contamination. It was discovered that due to an oil leak over many years the ground contamination was serious. Working alongside the environmental consultants to remediate the land, KpH removed over 7,000 tonnes of contaminated spoil to a licensed facility. Inert material was then resourced to backfill the excavation to match the surrounding landscape.
